title: The Research page
description: A case's workspace: questions answered with citations to the case's pages, its Intel briefs, its documents in windows, and the Control Center for its files and setup.
section: Research
order: 1

The Research page is a case's workspace. Open it with **Research** in the app drawer. A case opened from Pinned, Recents or New case opens here.

## The page

- **Research Genius**, at the bottom right: the chat. It answers questions about the case and cites the pages it read.
- **The Intel overview**, at the left: the case's newest Intel brief, as **Summary**, **Key findings** and **Brief**. ← → move through the others. A case with no brief shows **Generate brief**.
- **The case name**, at the top left: opens the case's details. See [the case name](/docs/getting-started/find-your-way-around#the-case-name).
- **The Control Center**, at the top right: the case's files, briefs and setup. See [the Control Center](#the-control-center).
- **The dock**, at the left, under the case name: the Intel overview, Documents and Briefs, then each document you open.

## Asking a question

Type the question and press ↵.

- **Read mode**, above the message box:
  - **Auto**: Search, or Whole case when the case has no saved text.
  - **Whole case**: every page goes with the question.
  - **Search**: the best-ranked pages go with the question, and Research Genius searches the case and reads more pages as it needs.
- **What was read** shows under each answer, for example "searched · read 14 of 304 pages".
- **Citations**: a marker after each cited sentence, coloured by its strongest source: red where documents conflict, blue for a primary source, grey for a supporting one. Hover over a marker to preview its card, or click to keep it open. The card shows the cited text page by page, with **Open** (the document, in a window) and **Open in review room** (the cited page in Doc Review).
- **Cost**: each answer ends with its model, tokens and cost.

## Windows

The Intel overview, **Documents**, **Briefs** and each document you open are windows. Open them from the dock. A closed window keeps its button there, outlined.

- **Move** by the title bar, **resize** from any edge or corner.
- **Minimize** folds a window to a card. Click the card to open it again.
- **Pin** keeps a window above the others.
- **Side by side**, in the dock, tiles every window that is not minimized.
- **Esc** closes the top window that is not pinned.

The Documents window lists the case's documents, each with its tag icon and filing control. See [tags and archive](/docs/filing/tags-and-archive) and [file a document](/docs/filing/file-a-document).

## The Control Center

The case's overview and setup, at the top right, behind Research Genius.

- **Files**: the case's files and pages. **Add** uploads PDF, JPEG or PNG files and parses them at once; it is off while a run is in progress. What the parse finds waits in Doc Review as documents to file.
- **Intel brief**: how many briefs the case has, and the newest one's template. **Open the briefs** opens the Briefs window.
- **Setup**, read-only, each line with **View all** to its Setup tab. A line that is your organization's default is tagged **default**.
  - **Classify**: the case's expected document list and version.
  - **Workflow**: the workflow the case runs under: the last one chosen at its gate. Files added without one, from the Control Center or Extract region, don't change it. A case that never ran one shows None — step by step.
  - **Intel**: the templates of the case's briefs, up to three. Before the first brief, the template **New brief** starts from.

**Minimize** folds the Control Center into a bar of icons at the top right. Hover over an icon to see its section over the page, or click to keep it open until you click elsewhere or press Esc. The last icon opens the Control Center again.

## On a smaller screen

Below 1,100 px wide, Research Genius is the page. Each window opens as a full-width sheet, with a back step. The band at the top holds the case name, the Control Center's icons and the dock's three buttons.
